Iowa State House District 89
"As state representative, my top priority will be to listen to the people I serve and bring honest, thoughtful leadership to the Legislature. I believe my experience and strong ties to the community have prepared me well to serve the people of House District 89. "
- Larry Marek

Born and raised on our family farm, I have deep ties to our community. After graduation from Washington High School, I served in the National Guard for eight years and attended the farm operation program at Iowa State University before returning to work on our family farm. I have served as director of our local bank and on the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. Jan and I attend St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside, where I've served as parish council president and trustee.

I'm running for state representative because I believe I have the experience to keep our state a world leader in renewable energy. I understand farming -- its history and traditions, technological advancements and the impact of government policies on family farmers like me. I've been a member of the Cattlemen's, Corn Growers, Soybean and Pork Producers Associations. I've also been active in 4-H and the Washington County Farm Bureau.
As District 9 Director of the Iowa Soybean Association, I have been working in the biofuels industry for many years. My plan for renewable energy will expand the research and production of renewable fuels while also increasing consumption and expanding markets. We've only begun to see the promise of renewable energy sources such as biodiesel, ethanol, wind and solar to boost our economy and create good-paying jobs right here in Washington, Johnson, and Jefferson counties.
In today's tough economic times, I'm deeply concerned about Iowa's middle class. We need to stop price gouging at the gas pump, work to make health care more affordable and ensure every Iowa child is ready to compete for jobs in today's global economy. It's also essential that we protect the jobs of Iowans by cracking down on CEOs who knowingly hire and then exploit illegal immigrants and children.
As state representative, my top priority will be to listen to the people I serve and bring honest, thoughtful leadership to the Legislature. I believe my experience and strong ties to the community have prepared me well to serve the people of House District 89.
